The Junior Golf Academy is held every Wednesday from 15:00-17:00 during the school term. Between 10 and 20 local disadvantaged children attend, Brendan Erasmus is their mentor.
As a child improves on their skills and knowledge of golf etiquette they progress onto the course.
A competition is held at the end of each school term which comprises an 18 hole division, a 9 hole division and 5 holes played from the 150 meter mark for the little ones. This competition invariably attracts a field of between 30 and 45 children.
Primary schools on the North Coast that have sent pupils to the junior academy include:
Shaka’s Kraal Primary
South African Junior Golf Foundation (SAJGF)
The SAGDB has supported our program over the past few years. This continuous support includes golf equipment, apparel, SAJGF holiday tournament entries and accommodation arrangements. SAJGF allow any member of a club with an official handicap and who is under the age of 18 years to become a member without having to pay affiliation fees. Close to 40 SAJGF tournaments are held around KZN during holiday periods, including our own Umhlali Junior Champs. The SAJGF is the most ideal way of learning to play competitive golf and helps to pave the way for all South African golfing superstars.
Umhlali is represented by nine members who regularly participate in SAJGF tournaments. The Umhlali Junior Development Fund assists juniors in getting an official club handicap.
The academy has a number of young up and coming junior talent that we look forward to monitoring in the future.
